In this photo Man Ray realises that the back of the woman looks like a violin/guitar. He position's her so that the image is focused on the woman's back. To get the point across about the woman's back looking like a violin Man Ray has also added the sound holes of a violin to the woman's back. Due to the lack of technology at the time the violin air holes don't look like part of the photo. He might of had to use bits of paper to stick them on, or he could of took another photo of the hols and used another negative. Personally the image does not appeal to me.
After visiting the photo parlour last week I now understand how Man Ray would of taken this photo. Because of the time this photo was taken Man Ray would have used a film camera to take this photo. I believe that he would of exposed the image to the correct amount of light it needed when developing this photo. And the to achieve the music notes on the woman's back he cut some music notes into a big sheet of card so that the notes fitted how he wanted them on her back, and so the rest of the card covered the film. When using the enlarger exposing the tiny note cut outs to more light would mean that part of the image would be receiving too much light and from visiting the photo parlour I know that over exposing the image to too much light would turn the image black. This is how I believe Man Ray achieved the music note effect.

This is then first experiment I did. I took two photos from the internet and merged them together in Photoshop. The rainbow effect used in the eye relates to the sky, this is effective because the colours in the eyes represents the colours in a rainbow. In this surrealism project I will develop this project further and develop my own ideas with my own photos.

I like this photo because there is clearly something wrong with the smoke coming out of the guys head, and the way the man is walking is really casual like nothing is wrong. Also the black suit with the white smoke allows the image to stand out from the background that is a very faint pink, purposely done so that the smoke stands out. It gives the expression that the mans body is a volcano? I would say this is a very old image because it doesn't look like its been done on a computer. in fact it actually looks like the artist as cut out the different photos and stuck them on to a piece of paper. TO DO - PROPER PHOTO ANYISIS

The photo was the first of my tree based photos and is what gave me the motivation to carry on with this idea. I couldn't use this photo as my final image because their are lots of faults even though the image is very basic. The main bad point with this image is that the exposure of the to images used is very different. I tried to fix this by changing the exposure on Photoshop, but it wasn't much help, therefore it looks like there is a dark patch in the middle of the photo ( underneath the tree). Also there are other students In the background which is very distracting.
This is by far my best image in the surrealism project, I got the basis of this idea from jerry uelsmann who is an American photographer born in 1934 who combined several negatives to create a surreal landscapes that interweave images of trees, rocks, water and human figures in new and unexpected ways. I then looked his idea up further un till i found this image on Pinterest ( http://www.pinterest.com/pin/312085449152394334 ) Uelsmann started his photography career in 1948 which makes it clear he would of used film to achieve his images. In my case I will be using digital photography and Photoshop to produce my image. I took the photo of the hand writing on a piece of paper on the white backdrop, it took a while to get this in the right position. I then when out to find a photo of a tree, I used a tree in which I could get a white background behind, this would make it easier for me to remove the background in Photoshop, luckily for me it was a cloudy day so I could use the clouds as a background. I then decided to extend this photo and add some birds that had been taken from the internet and can be found at this link: http://thumb9.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/1031908/111529886/stock-vector-flock-of-birds-silhouette-111529886.jpg. I thought that the tree coming out of the pencil would be really effective as In reality it would be the pencil that's made from the tree. I think this photo went really well and the black and white effect was effective. The bad points that I can pick out are that there is a small change in colour on the background where the trunk of the tree is. I'm not sure but I think this might of been because the colour of the pencil and the tree were very different, so next time I would get a darker coloured pencil.

This is a variation on the previous theme. I chose the pylon so I could stay on the wooden theme of the pencil, also the pylon is pretty much exactly the same shape as the pencil which made it really easy to put together, also with the pylon having the sky as the back ground and no branches and leafs like the previous image made it extremely easy to remove the background. Two down sides to this image would be that I never removed the outline of where the paper is on the white backdrop. Although this is not necessary I would of liked to get a picture of a pylon with the four cables coming out to the edge of the paper, though there is a bit of cable coming out of this one, it is only a small length and defiantly not as effective.
From my previous images I got the idea of creating surreal landscape, so in my spare time I gathered some images from the internet and put them together to produce this photo in Photoshop. This took a while to create particular the kids shadow has this effect was new to me. The only negatives about this image that I can think of is that the image of the school kid I used was a low quality image but I decided to use It as once the image was finished it was hard to see the low quality un till I zoomed in a bit. The only thoer downside to the image is that the kids shoe is really black, to black for the environment, and looks really out of place. Other than that the image turned out really well as all blending and lighting was done very well.
